Atrocities
of the Civil War in Sierra Leone produced many Medical Needs.
Hope
Universal is addressing these needs
After
10 years of civil war the population of Sierra Leone was left physically scarred
in many ways. Acts of
barbaric genocide by the rebels left thousands of civilians armless and maimed.
Most of the health care facilities and hospitals throughout Sierra Leone were
destroyed or disabled which left the people without much needed medical
treatment. At one point the life expectancy in Sierra Leone was as low as 34
years because of these problems. Today, one year after peace in Sierra Leone
medical assistance is greatly needed.
Hospital Destroyed by Rebels
Three Genocide Victims
Hope
Universal is making plans to reach Sierra Leone with Medical Assistance in
several ways. One is a plastic surgery clinic; many people were painfully
tattooed and had letters and emblems carved on their chests and foreheads after
they refused to follow the rebel’s agenda. We hope to surgically remove
or mask these cruel reminders left on the bodies of the innocent, which
were inflicted by the rebels. Along with trauma counseling which we plan
to provide, this will offer new hope and emotional healing to the victims.
This
past November 2002 Dr. Bill Eckstein (plastic surgeon) and Mark Stewart
(director) made an assessment trip to Sierra Leone and made initial plans for a
return trip in 2003 to help this group of people, many of who are children.
Walk-in clinics and prosthetic help for the amputee victims are also in the
plans.
