Sierra Leone was once one of the most picturesque countries in Africa with lovely white sandy beaches and green lush mountains with flowing streams. It has an abundance of minerals such as diamonds, bauxite and rutile and used to be a land of prosperity during the 60’s when the local currency was valued more than the US dollar. The country also had a small and almost ceremonial military because of the peace enjoyed by the inhabitants.
All of these things made it a perfect “little oasis” for many tourists and investors, but these things also became a curse for the indigenous population as they fell prey to greedy external powers and corrupt internal leadership.
Today, Sierra Leone is still recovering from years of civil war, bad leadership and political mismanagement. The UN has listed Sierra Leone as the world’s “least livable” country for the past several years because of the poverty and poor quality of life. How could a country with such beauty and potential now be the worst place in the world to live?
